Overheard a guy at the farmer's market say he found a chef's knife at a garage sale for $5 and sharpened it himself, and it got me thinking about how many of us overspend on gear.

I've got a buddy who dropped $400 on a Japanese blade and still sends it out for sharpening every two months, so who's really getting the better deal here, the thrifty hunter or the one with the shiny credit card bill?

Wait, you actually make a good point though. I used to think these fancy blades were worth it but now I'm rethinking that after reading your post. Spending $400 plus constant upkeep just doesn't add up for me anymore.
