Swapped my chef's knife grip after 8 years of bad cuts

I used to hold my knife with a tight fist grip, but last month a sous in Portland showed me the pinch grip. Now my index finger rests on the blade spine and I haven't nicked my knuckle once. Has anyone else had to completely change a longtime habit like this?

Wait, 8 years of bad cuts? Dude, that's wild.

Read somewhere that's exactly how long most NFL starters last before their body gives out.

Dude, the pinch grip is a game changer and honestly it saves your knuckles from looking like a war zone. I had to relearn how to grip a barbell for deadlifts after years of doing it wrong and wrecking my calluses. It takes a few weeks to feel natural, but stick with it and your hands will thank you.

Those 8 years of bad cuts, were you just raw-dogging it with a mixed grip the whole time? I switched to hook grip two years back and it took maybe a month before I stopped feeling like my thumbs were gonna pop off. The pinch grip sounds like it's more about palm positioning than finger placement - am I reading that right?
