Walked into a diner kitchen in Newark and saw a guy using a steam iron on a steak
I swear on my chef coat, the line cook pulled out a handheld fabric steamer and was blasting a ribeye with it to "warm it through" before plating. Owner just shrugged at me like this was normal. Has anyone else seen a bizarre shortcut that somehow didn't get the place shut down?

Wonder if that steamer ever touched somebody's armpit first.

Tbh reminds me of when I found someone's sock in a hotel coffee maker.

Man I used to be the guy rolling my eyes at people who got weirded out by diner kitchen stuff. Figured if the health department didn't shut it down, it was probably fine right? But this changed my mind completely. A fabric steamer on a steak is next level nasty. Like even if they sanitized it between uses, that thing has definitely touched someone's crusty shirt collar or worse. The fact the owner just shrugged tells me that place has zero standards behind the scenes. Makes you wonder what else they do that nobody catches. I'd rather eat a cold ribeye than a steamed one honestly lol.
