Appreciation post: My old boss in Cincinnati told me to always check the damper linkage first on a tough clean.

I finally listened after a stubborn job yesterday and it saved me a solid hour of head scratching. Anyone else have a go-to piece of advice that seemed too simple but always pays off?

A mouse nest in the blower wheel? That's a new one for me. I've pulled out toys and socks, but never an actual rodent apartment. Charles, you must work in some wild places. That story alone proves the point better than any training video. The simple stuff gets you every time.

Man, I feel that. My old foreman used to drill "listen to the motor before you touch a tool" into my head. I'd roll my eyes every time, thinking I knew better. Then I spent half a Friday swapping a capacitor on a blower that just had a mouse nest jamming the wheel. The sound was totally off, and I just didn't pay attention. I felt like a total rookie. That simple advice would have saved me a trip to the supply house and a lot of shame.

Oof, that's a classic lesson right there. I read a thing once about how experienced mechanics can diagnose a weird engine noise just by the pitch of it, same idea. Your story about @charles_young92 is a perfect example of why the old guys always say to use your ears first. It's easy to jump straight to the tools when you're in a hurry, but that basic check saves so much time and hassle. Makes you respect the simple advice a lot more after you learn it the hard way, lol.
