Baking soda trick for creosote buildup in the smoke shelf
I've been fighting a stubborn creosote spot on the smoke shelf for months on this one house in Tacoma. Tried wire brushing it, chemical sprays, even the chain knocker method, nothing got the crust off. Last week I mixed baking soda with a little water into a thick paste, smeared it on the shelf, let it sit for 20 minutes, then scrubbed with a stiff nylon brush. That stuff lifted right off, way easier than I expected. Has anyone else tried this or is there a better home remedy I should know about before I do the full flue?
