Had a customer in Asheville ask me why I always start at the top

I explained it's to keep the soot from falling on the clean damper, and she said 'So you're working clean to dirty, like an artist.' Has anyone else had a client reframe the job in a way that stuck with you?

Love how @betty_carter called you a messy editor, that's perfect. Had a customer in Greenville watch me clean their dryer vent and said I was "performing surgery on their laundry machine," still cracks me up thinking about it. People come up with the wildest comparisons and honestly it makes the job more fun when they do.

Had a guy in Knoxville watch me clean his gutters and said I was "editing the house, taking out the bad lines." Felt fancy for a second, then a leaf chunk fell right down my shirt. So much for being an artist, more like a messy editor.

That's actually a pretty good way to look at it though. Editing is messy work. You ever see a writer's first draft? It's all over the place, full of stuff that needs to be cut. You're just doing the same thing for a house. The leaf down the shirt is part of the process, like a coffee stain on a manuscript.

Sounds more like a messy editor to me.
