Had to choose between a full liner replacement or a heat shield repair on a 1920s flue in Cincinnati. Went with the shield. Two months later, the customer called about a new crack.

My old boss in Dayton always said those old flues need a liner... the heat just finds the next weak spot. We ended up going back and doing a full stainless steel liner after a patch failed.

Our crew in Columbus has patched dozens of those old clay flues with refractory mortar. The key is a full depth repair, not just a surface skim. We've got some holding strong for over five years now.

My first chimney patch in Akron lasted maybe two months before it cracked.
