I finally listened to a homeowner in Portland who said my cleanout was too messy
They pointed out the soot dust on their patio, so I switched to a heavier drop cloth and a shop vac with a HEPA filter. Anyone else get grief about dust control and change their setup?

Makes me wonder how many other things we don't fix 'til someone points it out.

Ever try that water mist trick on a brick fireplace? I did once and it left this weird, streaky film that was harder to clean than the original soot dust. For me, stopping the dust from getting out in the first place is the real fix, like @wade250 said about keeping it from hanging in the air. That's why I'm all about sealing the work area with plastic sheeting and running a good air scrubber before I even start the messy part. A wet vac just cleans up the mess you already made.

Try a water mist to knock down the dust first.

Yeah, that's the only thing that really works for me too. I was sanding drywall last week and the dust just hung in the air forever. A quick spray from a bottle made it all drop right down. Saved me so much cleanup time.
