I hit 500 sweeps and realized I've been doing something wrong for years

Everyone says to always use a wire brush on masonry, but after my 500th job I checked my old work with a camera and saw the wire was leaving micro-scratches that hold more soot. I've switched to poly brushes for everything but the worst creosote. Anyone else make a switch that went against common advice?

After my 500th job" is a wild way to learn that lesson.

Yeah, that tracks with what I heard from a chimney inspector last fall. He said those tiny grooves from wire brushes are like little gutters for the next season's buildup. Makes total sense now. Gibson.morgan has a point, it's wild to find out after so many jobs, but better late than never. I've seen guys use nylon brushes on everything but a total blockage, and their follow-up inspections always look cleaner.

Reminds me of my neighbor's DIY disaster last winter...
