I was in an old hardware store in Lancaster yesterday and saw they still sell those heavy canvas drop cloths we used to use.

What's so great about those dusty old things anyway?

Guess you've never tried to chase a plastic tarp in the wind.

They last forever, for one. A plastic tarp gets one hole and it's trash. That canvas soaks up paint drips so you don't slip, and it's heavy enough to not blow around.

Read somewhere that back in the 1800s, painters would use old ship sails for drop cloths. They called them "sailcloth drops" and said a good one could outlast three generations of painters. Made me think, sometimes the old ways stick around for a reason. Canvas just handles the real world better than plastic ever will.
