My cousin in construction says our trade is dying because of new furnace rules
He told me over coffee that with the push for electric heat pumps and high efficiency sealed gas units, the need for sweeps will drop by half in ten years. I argued back that older homes with fireplaces and wood stoves will always need service, plus we do inspections and liner repairs. He just shrugged and said 'adapt or find another trade'. It got me thinking about the long term. For those of you with a few decades in, do you see the work drying up, or just changing?

My buddy's chimney business actually grew after he started doing dryer vent cleaning too.

My uncle's crew in Boston pivoted to historic masonry, something dylan_brown30 might see too.

Yeah, and like @angelarivera said, adding services is key. My old boss saw the writing on the wall years back and got certified for those fancy gas fireplace inserts. Now that's like half his calls, just swapping out old logs for new sealed units. It's still chimneys, just different.

My neighbor's HVAC guy does the same thing. Started offering mini-split cleanings and now that's 60% of his bookings. People just want something simple and sealed now. Makes sense when you look at how many houses around here are ditching wood burning for good.
