I mean, is it really that big of a deal though? Those guys at the supply house are always trying to one-up each other with how reckless the next guy is. I've seen plenty of old timers who never touched their flues and their houses are still standing just fine. Unless he's burning pine sap soaked wood every day, a little bit of buildup isn't gonna cause an instant inferno.

Respectfully, I see it a little different. A slow buildup of creosote can turn into a dense, rock hard glaze that's a whole different beast than just some light soot. A chimney fire from that stuff can get hot enough to crack the flue tiles or warp a metal liner, and that damage might not show up until the next time you use it. It's not about instant infernos as much as the structural damage that sneaks up on you.

That guy must really love the thrill of living dangerously. I'm guessing his next project is installing a gas line with a cigarette lighter. Maybe he's trying to start a new trend called "rustic central heating." Nothing says home safety like a chimney that's basically a firework launcher waiting for a spark.
