Paid $600 for a magnetic sweep and it snagged on a hidden damper

Last Tuesday I finally bought one of those fancy magnetic flue brushes after my rope setup kept twisting on a 45 degree bend. The thing worked great for about an hour until it grabbed onto a spring damper that wasn't even in the plan, snapped the cable clean. Cost me $600 for the unit plus another $120 to have a guy come out and pull the mess out with a fish tape. I'm back to my old fiber brush and a prayer now, honestly feels like I got conned by the marketing hype. Has anyone else tried these magnets on older homes or am I just cursed with weird flue geometry?
