That magnetic sweep cover I rigged up saved me 20 minutes on a job in Lansing last Tuesday

I got tired of fishing soot out of the firebox bottom with a hand brush so I taped a rare earth magnet to the inside of the sweep cover plate and now I just pop it off and dump the debris into a bag in seconds - has anyone else tried a magnet trick like that?

Ugh yeah I saw a buddy try that once and his magnet shattered on the third pop-off. He spent longer picking little magnet bits out of the soot than he would've just using the hand brush.

Wait, aren't rare earth magnets pretty brittle and could crack when you pop the cover off?

Did I used to think that? Yeah I totally did, I figured they'd just snap right off. But seeing some of the builds people have posted here where they pop those covers off without any damage honestly changed my mind on the whole thing.
