The 3am fire alarm drill that made me question my 500 sq ft studio decision
Moved to Chicago last November for a job, ended up in this micro studio in the Loop because it was all I could afford after the rent rates here. At 3am on a Tuesday, the building alarm goes off, and I'm stumbling down 12 flights of stairs in my pajamas holding my cat and a half-eaten bag of chips. Turns out some drunk guy pulled the fire alarm in the lobby as a prank, and we all stood outside in 14 degree weather for 40 minutes. I started thinking, back home in Peoria I could've had a two bedroom for the same price and never deal with this nonsense. But the next morning I walked to my job in 8 minutes flat, grabbed a decent coffee, and had a great view of the lake. My friend back home says I'm crazy for staying, but the career stuff here is real. For anyone who moved to a big city and hit a rough night, did the small daily wins ever outweigh the stupid stuff, or did you eventually call it quits and move back?
