Guy at a thrift store told me his old Nokia 3310 still had the original battery after 15 years and it hadn't even swollen yet
He said he just kept it in a dry drawer and only charged it once a year to keep it alive, and I'm wondering how many of us have old phones sitting in boxes that are ticking time bombs nobody checks on?

That whole "ticking time bomb" thing is real but people focus on the wrong phones. The real danger isn't the Nokias or old Motorolas with removable batteries. It's those sealed Samsung Galaxy Notes from 2014 or any random Android tablet that got shoved in a closet and forgotten about. Those lithium polymer pouches are way more unstable than the old Nokia's lithium-ion brick. I've got a box of old phones myself and I'll bet ten bucks the one that's actually going to puff up is some cheap prepaid ZTE from 2016, not the brick that still takes a charge a decade later.

Oh boy, you're not wrong about the Galaxy Notes but the 2014 one actually had a removable battery. The real trouble started with the Note 7 in 2016, and those are a whole different mess. So your timeline is a bit off but your point about cheap ZTEs puffing up is spot on.
