I called BS on the rice trick for 15 years, then my Nokia 3310 sat in a puddle overnight and here we are
So I'm 34 and I've been messing with old phones since I was a kid, and the whole "put your wet phone in rice" thing always sounded like total nonsense to me. My Nokia 3310 was sitting on the tailgate of my truck in the driveway during that big rainstorm in Tulsa back on the 12th, and I didn't find it until the next morning half submerged in a puddle by the tire. I figured the thing was done for good, but my buddy Doug kept telling me to just bury it in a bag of rice for two days, and I only did it to shut him up. Fast forward 48 hours, I pull it out, wipe the dust off, and that phone powers right on with 3 bars of battery. What got me is that the 3310 is plastic and rubber gaskets all the way through, so the rice probably did basically nothing and the phone just didn't care about water in the first place. Ever since then I've been wondering if I wasted all that worry on my other phones. Has anyone actually tested rice vs just letting an old brick dry on a windowsill, or is the whole thing just placebo for people like me?
