Just realized my old Nokia 3310 still has a better signal than my iPhone
I pulled my old Nokia 3310 out of a drawer last weekend after hearing some kid complain about dropped calls on 5G. Charged it up and walked around my basement where my iPhone shows zero bars and that brick had two full bars. Kinda wild how a phone from 20 years ago can outperform modern stuff in some ways. Anyone else keep an old phone around just for the nostalgia or emergency use?

Respectfully, that's not really a fair comparison. Your Nokia 3310 barely does anything except make calls and send texts, so it sips power and has a simple radio that works on old towers. Modern phones cram in 4G, 5G, GPS, Bluetooth, and wifi all at once, plus you're holding a giant metal and glass slab that blocks signal way more than a plastic brick. I dropped calls all the time on my old flip phones back in the day too, people just accepted it because nobody expected much. The real test is seeing if that Nokia can actually load a webpage or send a picture message - it can't, so the signal doesn't matter much.

Oh man, you're totally right but I actually read something interesting about this! There was this article about how older phones like the Nokia 3310 use something called "circuit-switched" networks that are basically bulletproof for voice calls, while modern phones jump between different bands and protocols trying to save battery or whatever. My buddy who works at a cell tower company told me that the old 2G towers actually pump out way more power per channel than 4G or 5G towers do, so the signal just goes through walls better. Plus those Nokias had those HUGE antennas inside them, not the tiny little strips they cram into iPhones now. I still keep a Nokia 1100 in my glovebox for emergencies when I go camping up in the mountains where newer phones just give up completely.

I actually saw a video from some RF engineer who explained that the Nokia 3310 uses a much older modulation scheme called GMSK which is way more resilient to interference and weak signals compared to the OFDM stuff modern phones use for LTE and 5G. Basically the older tech is just simpler and tougher, like driving a manual car vs a computerized one. Not saying I'd go back to snake and monochrome screens though, but it does make you wonder if all this complexity is actually worth it when you're standing in a dead zone.
