My uncle's advice about CRT monitors saved me $80 last month

He told me to check the local recycling center's electronics pile before buying a retro monitor online... Sure enough found a Dell Trinitron for free, just needed a new VGA cable. Anyone else have luck hunting for old tech at weird places like that?

My local dump has a "free pile" area but the workers shoo people away from the electronics section unless you ask nice. I scored a 2005 Sony KV-27FS100 there two years ago for free, just had to carry it up two flights of stairs. The tube was pristine but the remote was missing, cost me $6 on eBay to replace it. Funny thing is those Trinitrons are getting heavier every year but people still toss them out without thinking. That $80 you saved is basically a full tank of gas these days so your uncle steered you right.

@jamie_webb67 makes a good point but is it really that deep though? Finding a free CRT at the dump is cool and all but people act like they found buried treasure when they spot a Trinitron in a scrap pile. At the end of the day it's just a heavy old TV that you can't even watch modern content on without adapters.
