Rant: that old Nokia 3310 I found in a drawer still works better than my iPhone for calls
Pulled it out after 8 years in storage, charged it with a random charger from Goodwill for $2, and it held a signal in my basement where my iPhone drops bars every time. Has anyone else gone back to a dumb phone for basic stuff or am I just being nostalgic about something that actually still holds up?

Isn't it crazy how a plastic brick from 20 years ago can still beat a modern smartphone at the one thing it's supposed to do? The 3310 was built different, literally solid enough to survive concrete drops and those old networks were designed to reach you anywhere. Nostalgia is part of it, but the signal game was absolutely better back then.

The signal thing is real though. Those old networks operated on lower frequencies that could punch through walls and travel miles, while modern 4G and 5G bands need a tower practically in your pocket to work right. My 3310 would still show full bars in my basement where my Pixel sits on "SOS" mode. Plus there's the antenna design - phones used to have actual external antennas or at least big internal ones that weren't afraid to stick out a bit, instead of trying to hide everything in a glass sandwich. People forget how much those old networks were engineered for coverage first, speed second, and we kind of lost that balance somewhere along the way.
