Took me 5 hours to figure out why my old Atari 2600 wouldn't display any picture on a modern TV

Everyone says just grab an RCA to HDMI converter and you're good. Well I went through 3 different converters from Amazon before I realized the issue was the old RF switch box needed to be cleanly connected first. Nobody talks about that part. Spent way too long googling and trying different cables. Has anyone else dealt with this specific headache?

Totally been there. Spent a whole weekend trying to get my old NES to work on a flat screen. The RF switch is the hidden trap nobody warns you about. Those old connections get dirty and crusty over time. I had to clean mine with a q-tip and rubbing alcohol before it finally worked. Then once you get a signal the converter matters too but only if the first connection is solid. It's like a two step process nobody explains.

the hidden trap nobody warns you about" - that's exactly right. I used to think people just weren't trying hard enough with these old consoles. I figured if you bought the right adapter it would just work. Then I tried hooking up my own 2600 last year and spent three evenings fighting with it. The RF switch was the whole problem, just like you said. A little dirt or oxidation on those old connectors and the signal gets so weak nothing can pick it up. I had to clean mine twice with alcohol before it finally showed anything on screen. Now I tell everyone to start with the RF switch before they even look at converters.
