My dad still calls his hard drive "the memory box" and I can't tell if he's trolling or not.

Does your dad mess with tech stuff a lot, or is he completely hands-off with it? Because @aaron_mitchell is right about it being called a spindle in some circles, but I wonder if your dad is actually trying to be clever about data storage. In the old days, before hard drives were common, people used to store stuff on actual floppy disks and called them "memory boxes" sometimes. If he's old enough to remember those days, he might just be mixing up terms from 30 years ago with modern hardware. It doesn't sound like trolling to me, more like he's stuck in a habit that made sense way back when. Unless he's got a history of joking around about computers in a weird way, then maybe he's just having fun at your expense.

Actually it's usually called a spindle not a memory box.
