A guy on my block in Toledo showed me his $12 rain barrel setup and it hit me harder than any climate doc
We were standing in his driveway last spring and he pointed at it and said he started catching runoff just so his tomatoes would quit drying out, then kept doing it because the storm drain on our street floods the neighbor's basement every big rain. I've been thinking about that barrel for a year now, way more than I think about any of the big summits. Anyone else got a neighbor who got them started on something small like that?
My grandpa had this thing where he'd save all his coffee cans and poke holes in the bottoms and line them up on the porch rail to catch rain for his pepper plants. I always thought it was just old man stuff until I watched him dump one out and it took like 20 seconds of solid water. Then he showed me the gutter diverter he rigged up with a milk jug and some hose and I was hooked. Now I've got two barrels off my downspout and my neighbor keeps asking where I got the screens so the mosquitoes don't get in. Funny how one guy tinkering in his yard can spread faster than any pamphlet.
