Had to choose between a heat pump and a new gas furnace for my old house
My 30 year old furnace died in january and I had to pick between a $8,500 heat pump install or a $4,200 gas furnace. I went with the heat pump because I wanted to cut my carbon footprint. First winter here in ohio was rough though - my electric bill jumped $120 a month when temps dropped below 20 degrees. The AC side worked great last summer and I feel better about not burning gas. Anyone else made the switch and had mixed results like me?

@river952 $120 extra a month adds up fast, I'd rather burn gas than eat that cost.

Whoa, that's a tough spot to be in. My buddy in Michigan did the same thing last year and he's been telling me the same story. His electric bill shot up too in January and he was freaking out about it. But then his AC broke this summer and his neighbor's gas furnace needed a new part, and we all just laughed about how nothing's perfect I guess. He's still happy with his choice overall though, says he sleeps better knowing he's not burning gas.
