Just realized my compost bin was totally wrong after 2 years

I had this plastic bin in the backyard for 2 years and it always smelled terrible and attracted ants, then last week my neighbor showed me her pile just sitting on the ground with no bin at all and it smelled like earth. Turns out I was suffocating everything by keeping it closed up tight with no air flow. Has anyone else switched from a sealed bin to an open pile and seen a big difference?
