My neighbor insisted I get an energy audit before replacing my furnace

I thought it was a waste of time, but the guy from the utility company found a huge air leak in my attic that I never knew about. Fixing that with some spray foam cost me $300, but my heating bill dropped by about 20% this past winter in Spokane. Has anyone else had an audit that found something surprising like that?

Our audit in Boise showed the old water heater was losing heat through uninsulated pipes. Wrapping them cut our gas use by 15% last year.

Man, that's a huge win finding something that simple. Makes you wonder how many other houses are bleeding heat from spots we never check. Blake792 has a point about fixing the wrong thing first, because you'd assume the heater itself was the problem. It's wild that just wrapping up some pipes can make that big of a dent in your bill. Shows why those audits are worth it, to find the real leaks.

Reminds me how @wade250's pipe wrap shows we often fix the wrong thing first.
