My neighbor's diesel truck idling for 30 minutes finally made me lose it

I live in Denver and every morning at 6am this guy fires up his F-250 and just lets it run while he drinks coffee inside. Last week I walked over and asked him to shut it off. He said it's 'good for the engine' and that I should mind my own business. So I called the city's air quality hotline and filed a complaint. Anyone else dealing with people who think idling isn't a problem?

Ugh, that is so frustrating! I'm sorry you had to deal with that at 6 in the morning. I can't believe he still thinks idling is good for the engine, that's such an old myth. Good for you for actually calling the hotline, I hope the city follows up on it. People need to realize this stuff adds up, especially in a place like Denver with the air quality issues you all have.

Yeah, that "good for the engine" myth is really stubborn. I had a neighbor pull the same thing on me, so I printed out the Denver idling rules from the city website and taped it to his windshield while he was sleeping. Sounds petty but he never idled in front of my house again. Did you file a complaint with the city's air quality hotline too? They usually need a plate number to actually do something about it.

Wait, is Denver actually known for having worse air quality than other cities? I thought it was mostly the altitude that messed with people, not pollution. Anyway, for the original post - that "good for the engine" line is pure garbage with modern trucks. Those newer diesels have exhaust systems that actually clog up and cause more problems when you idle them all the time. My buddy runs a diesel repair shop and he says ten minutes of idling does more harm than good on any truck made after 2007. The oil never warms up enough to burn off moisture and the emissions system gets gummed up. Your neighbor is basically paying to wreck his own truck while making everyone else breathe garbage air. You did the right thing calling the hotline.
