Just hit 50,000 parts on a single tool insert and I'm still shocked

Running a batch of 4140 steel brackets on the old Haas, I swapped in a fresh CNMG insert expecting the usual 8,000 part life. That was six months ago. I just passed 50,000 pieces and it's still cutting within spec, with no chatter or major wear. I've never seen anything like it in my 12 years on the floor. I'm running it at 650 SFM with a 0.012" feed, and the coolant mix is just our shop's standard stuff. Has anyone else ever pushed a tool this far past its supposed limit on a tough material?

Sounds like you got the one insert that actually read the spec sheet. Better go buy a lottery ticket while this luck holds out.

Come on, it's just a router working right. Feels like we set the bar so low for stuff we buy that when it does its job, we act shocked. Patricia262's joke about lottery tickets is funny, but it's kind of sad if you think about it. Shouldn't we expect things to work like the box says? Maybe the real problem is we're used to getting junk.

My buddy had that happen with a router once.
