Old timer at the shop floor made me rethink tool offsets
Had a guy named Ray who ran a Bridgeport for 30 years watch me set my offsets on a new Haas last Tuesday. He said I was wasting time being too perfect on the indicator. Told me to leave 0.005 and approach the part in two cuts instead of one. I argued about cycle time but he just laughed and walked off. After trying it on a batch of 40 flanges, I cut my scrap rate from 3 parts down to zero. Anyone else find that the old school guys have methods that just work despite the math saying otherwise?
You ever read that old Machinery's Handbook trick about treating the tool as a blunt instrument instead of a scalpel? lol. I saw a guy on a forum say he does the same thing, leaves a few thou and lets the second pass clean up, and he swears his inserts last twice as long. The math says you're adding time, but the result says you're saving money on scrap and tool wear. Ray probably knows the machine better than the manual does, that's for sure.
