Old timer at the shop swore by roughing with HSS before finishing with carbide
I ignored him for six months and kept blowing through expensive inserts on hardened D2, so I finally tried his method last week and got 40% longer tool life on a single job - has anyone else found that combo actually saves money in the long run?

Hate when that happens - you ignore the old school guys for months and then they're right all along. Good on you for giving it a shot though, that's a solid improvement.

Ngl @claire_grant34, is this really that deep though? People make it sound like a life or death situation when a hobby project doesn't work out. Sometimes you just move on and try something else, no big deal either way.

You gotta admit though sometimes those "hobby projects" turn into something bigger than you planned. I had a little side thing making jewelry that took off way faster than I expected and then suddenly I had orders piling up and couldn't just go "oh well it didn't work out" without letting people down. Better to treat it like a real commitment from the start even if it's just for fun, keeps your head straight when things get messy.
