Overheard a setup guy say 'check your vise pressure first' and it solved a week of headaches
I was fighting a repeatability issue for 6 days on a 5-axis job in Toledo. Parts were drifting 0.003" on the same hole pattern, no idea why. Yesterday I heard the old setup guy tell an apprentice to check the vise pressure before blaming the machine or the tool. I went back and put a torque wrench on my Kurt vise, found it was 15 ft-lbs off from where I set it last Monday. That was the whole problem, thermal expansion from the shop heater kicking on at 6 AM. Now I check vise pressure every Monday morning before anything else. Has anyone else had thermal drift mess with their clamping force like that?
