Shoutout to the old guy on night shift who said 'let it sit in the spindle overnight'
About 6 months ago I was fighting this boring bar chatter on a batch of 200 aluminum housings, and I could not get it quiet for anything. I messed with speeds, feeds, tool offsets, even swapped inserts twice, and the finish still looked like a washboard. This older operator named Dale, who has ran lathes longer than I have been alive, walked by and said just leave it running in the spindle overnight at half the feed. I thought he was messing with me, but I was out of ideas so I tried it. Came in the next morning and the surface finish was smooth as glass and no chatter, plus the insert still had life left in it. He never really explained the why, just shrugged and said the machine likes a slow steady cut when nobody is watching. I still do it on tricky bores and it works every time. Is this a real thing or did I just get lucky that one night?
