Was sure those cheap insert holders from the flea market in Dayton were junk, ran one for 6 hours on steel
Bought a box of 5 for $20 from a guy with a folding table of random tooling, figured they were good for aluminum at best. Ran one on 4140 at 180 SFM for a full 6 hour roughing job and the insert was still cutting clean at the end. Any of you got a cheap tool that surprised you like that, or did I just get lucky on this batch?
That $20 for 5 works out to 4 bucks a corner, and you got 6 hours on 4140 at 180 SFM, which is real money saved no matter how you slice it. The part that gets me is the batch thing, because those flea market boxes are usually mixed lots from who knows where and half of them are mystery carbide that chips on the first pass. What I'd do is go back and buy every box that guy has left from the same lot, then keep one as a control and run the rest, so you find out fast if it was the whole batch or just one lucky insert. Write the lot number on the box with a Sharpie, because a year from now you won't remember which table it came from. Cheap tooling is only a deal if you can get more of it.
