My mentor told me to break code on purpose, I thought he was crazy

Back in March, my senior dev said to deliberately add bugs to my practice projects so I could learn to debug faster. I ignored him for weeks, then finally tried it on a React form and found 3 issues in 20 minutes that used to take me hours. Has anyone else used this trick, or do you just fix things as you spot them?

My buddy Steve tried this once and ended up breaking his login page so bad he couldn't fix it for a whole weekend.
