TIL my ancient laptop can handle coding just fine

Was sure I needed a new computer to start, but a few beginner projects ran smoothly on it. Changed my whole approach to learning.

Ever notice how this happens with hobbies too? People think they need the best gear to start painting or playing guitar. But starting simple forces you to learn the real skills first.

Hold up, is this really such a big deal? I get the idea of learning basics, but sometimes starting with junk tools just makes things harder. Like, coding on an ancient laptop might mean waiting ages for things to compile, which kills motivation. Or trying to cut wood with a cheap saw could turn a fun project into a chore. Isn't the goal to learn well, not suffer through bad equipment? What's wrong with using good tools if they help you learn better?

Honestly, that's a great mindset shift! It really puts the focus on learning the skills, not just having the gear.

Two years back, I got into woodworking with just a basic hand saw and a cheap hammer. I decided to learn all the basic skills, like making strong joints and smooth finishes, using only those tools (it was a real challenge). @grant_knight79, your point about focusing on skills really hits home for me. That approach meant I understood why better tools help later, instead of just buying them first. Now when I build a table, I know exactly what each tool does because I learned without them. It made me a much better craftsman in the long run.
