A friend told me my pour over was too fast and it changed my morning coffee
I was making my usual pour over at home, using my Hario V60. A friend who works at a cafe in Seattle was over and watched me do it. She said, 'You're pouring way too fast, you're basically just rinsing the grounds.' I was finishing the whole thing in under two minutes. She showed me her method, where she pours slowly in circles, letting the water really drip through before adding more. I tried it the next day, aiming for about three and a half minutes total. The difference was huge. The coffee tasted sweeter and had more flavor, not just bitter. I didn't realize speed made such a big change. Now I'm much more patient with my morning routine. Has anyone else had a simple tip completely upgrade their brew?

Oh wow, that's awesome you got that tip! But just to clarify, the total time isn't the only thing that matters, it's more about the pour itself. If you just dump all the water in fast to hit 3.5 minutes, it still won't be great. The slow circles your friend showed you are the key part because they let the grounds soak evenly. My own coffee got way better when I focused on that, not just watching the clock.

Totally... that slow pour thing reminds me of watering plants. Rush it and the water just runs off, take your time and it soaks in right.

Yeah, that slow pour makes all the difference. I used to rush it too, and my coffee tasted thin and a bit sour. After I started doing those slow circles, like @juliarodriguez said, it was like a different drink. The body got fuller, and I could actually taste the fruit notes my local roaster puts on the bag. It turns a simple routine into something you have to focus on for a minute, which I kind of like now. That patience really does change what ends up in your cup.

Wait, really? I've actually had the opposite happen. When I pour too slow, my coffee ends up tasting kind of flat and over-extracted, like all the bitter stuff comes out at the end. I get a better cup with a steady, medium pour that finishes around three minutes. Maybe it depends on the beans or the grinder?
