Finally figured out how to get a clean pour from my old French press

For months my morning brew had way too much grit in the bottom of the cup, which was a real bummer. I read online to let the grounds settle for a full 5 minutes after the steep, then press down super slow over 30 seconds. Tried it yesterday and it actually worked, the coffee was way smoother! I'm using a Bodum I've had since college, so it's not the gear. Has anyone else found a specific timing trick that fixed a problem with their favorite brewing method?

What about the grind size though? I had a similar grit issue and it turned out my pre-ground stuff was just too fine for a press. Switched to a coarser grind and that made a bigger difference than any timing trick for me.

Honestly, it's just coffee, not a science project. A slightly off grind might give you some grit but it's still totally drinkable. People get way too deep into the tiny details sometimes.

Totally agree with letting it settle, that's the real key. The slow press just keeps the settled grounds from getting stirred back up. Grind size matters too, but if your grind is already coarse enough, the wait time is what makes it clean. It's not being fussy, it's just fixing a gritty cup, which is a legit problem lol. Some of us don't want to chew our coffee.
