Took me 45 minutes to figure out why my espresso shot was running too fast

I kept dialing in my grind finer and finer but the shot was still gushing out in like 12 seconds. After almost an hour of frustration I realized I forgot to put the gasket back on the group head after cleaning it. Has anyone else ever done something this dumb with their machine?

Wait... you forgot the gasket? That's like forgetting to put the oil cap back on your car before driving it... just a tiny detail that makes a huge mess. I've definitely done dumber stuff though. Once spent a whole afternoon trying to figure out why my grinder sounded like a dying lawnmower, only to find a bean had wedged itself behind the burrs. Another time I took apart my whole machine to descale it, put it back together, and then realized I'd left the water reservoir empty... just sat there staring at it for a solid minute feeling real smart.

Man I feel that "sat there staring at it" part so hard. @leo_black76 you reminded me of the time I spent a whole Saturday dialing in a new espresso blend, pulling shot after shot, getting frustrated because nothing tasted right. Turned out I never took the protective plastic off the bottom of the portafilter basket. Just a little piece of film ruining everything. Felt like a real genius when I peeled it off and suddenly all my shots were actually drinkable. Sometimes I think half this hobby is just learning to double check the dumb stuff first.

Why was the gasket the first thing you checked, or did you rule out everything else before that lightbulb moment? Sounds like you went through the whole grinder adjustment dance before remembering a part was literally missing, which is a special kind of espresso pain. I'm curious how many shots you wasted before the gasketless setup finally tipped you off.
