Showerthought: that diploma mill billboard off I-40 near Amarillo says more about us than them
I drive that stretch of I-40 through Amarillo about six times a year for work, and there is a billboard out there promising a full bachelor's degree in 8 months for under $4,000. Everyone in my circle laughs at it and says the same joke about printing your own paper. Here is where I get off the bus: the people pulling over to call that number are not dumb, they are folks who got told for 20 years that no degree equals no future, and this is the only door left open to them. We would rather mock the sign than ask why the price of the real thing has gotten so far out of reach that a fake sounds like a fair deal.
My buddy drove a truck for years and got passed over for every dispatcher job because he had no paper, so he paid for one of those quick programs out of desperation. Turns out the credits were fake and he lost the money and the job lead anyway. The saddest part is people know it is a scam and still call, because the real door costs more than they will make in years.
