A collector at my shop told me to stop bagging my comics flat

I used to store all my silver age books flat in short boxes because I thought it saved space. This old guy at my local shop in Denver said I was crushing the spines and causing stress folds. He showed me how standing them upright with backing boards actually keeps the staples from bending. Has anyone else wrecked a key issue by stacking them wrong?

Funny you mention that. I actually talked to a guy at a con who said the same thing about backing boards. He told me they aren't just for covers. He said the board itself stiffens the book so the weight of the books above doesn't push down on the spine. When you stack them flat without boards the whole pile just bends at the weakest spot which is usually the staples. So if you're gonna stand them up boards help keep the book from sagging over time. Especially on thicker books like annuals. I seen a stack of 80s annuals that looked like they were melting from being flat stacked for years.

Old guy at my local shop in Denver" probably knows his stuff but backing boards aren't really needed for keeping staples straight, they're more for preventing cover curl. You're right about standing them up though, that's the key.
