Am I the only one who used to just buy every #1 issue, but now I only grab stuff from writers I actually follow?
I switched after my pull list hit over 40 titles last year and my local shop guy in Austin basically said 'dude, you're gonna go broke' lol, so what's your main rule for picking up a new series?

My own breaking point was a $200 week at my shop in San Antonio. I had to make a hard rule, which is now I only start a new book if I already like the creative team from past work. No more blind number one buys just for the hype. It cut my list down by more than half, honestly. I still check out new stuff, but I wait for the trade if it's an unknown writer or artist. My wallet and my shelf space are way happier for it.

Totally get that. Hit my limit after buying a stack of number ones that went nowhere. Now I just follow a couple artists I really trust.

Exactly. I only buy new stuff if I've already followed the writer or artist for a while.

Yeah, that's the exact same trap I fell into. My rule now is pretty simple. I have to have read at least one full story from the writer before I'll buy a new number one. Not just a single issue, a whole arc or trade. It saved me so much money and clutter. I still get that fear of missing out, but then I remember all the number ones I bought that just sat in a box after issue three. What's the last series you picked up that actually lived up to the hype?
