Been collecting since 1989 and the cover price jump still gets me
I was digging through some old long boxes last weekend and found my copy of X-Men #1 from 1991. That thing had a cover price of $1.50. Walk into a shop today and a basic issue runs you $4.99 or more. Over 30 years that's a bigger jump than inflation alone would explain. What do you think the main driver is, more ads or just companies knowing we'll pay it?

The real reason is they figured out we're all addicts. I flipped through a new issue of Amazing Spider-Man the other day and counted ads for 3 different energy drinks and a sneaker company before I even got to page 10. They're charging us premium prices AND selling ad space. Might as well just put a toll booth at the front of every shop.

It's the same with everything now, isn't it? I was at the gas station last week and couldn't find a single candy bar that wasn't some limited edition tie-in for a movie or video game.
