Hot take: I used to think variant covers were a cash grab

For years I rolled my eyes at the $40+ variant covers at my local shop in Portland. Then a buddy handed me a Skottie Young variant for a Spider-Man issue and the art actually made the story hit harder for me. I still won't drop big money on them, but has anyone else had one change how they read a comic?

Man that blank cover doodle idea is GENIUS. It's like how people put stickers on their laptops or paint old furniture, taking something mass-produced and making it YOURS. That kind of personal touch just makes the whole experience stick with you way longer than a factory look ever could.

The Skottie Young Spider-Man variant was the one that got me too. I picked up a Batman blank cover and let a local artist doodle on it for five bucks, made the whole issue feel like a one-of-a-kind thing.
