I used to think collecting variant covers was the whole point

Last month at the Portland comic shop, I saw a dad trying to explain a Miles Morales issue to his kid, and the kid was just lit up. I realized I'd been so focused on the chase for rare covers that I forgot why I got into comics in the first place. That single moment of someone else's joy hit me harder than any slabbed 9.8 ever did. Has anyone else had a moment like that snap them out of a collecting rut?

Ha, chasing plastic instead of stories.

My entire longbox of hologram cards from the 90s just collected dust for years.

I had a long box full of those 90s chromium covers, all bagged and boarded. Thought I was building something real. Then my nephew pulled a beat up copy of Ultimate Spider-Man off my shelf and just devoured it in one sitting. The way he talked about it for a week straight made those shiny covers feel like cardboard. I sold most of them to buy more stuff he'd actually read.
