Just realized I almost tossed my dad's copy of Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars #8 over a water stain
Was digging through a long box at my parents' place in Toledo last month and found his copy of Secret Wars #8, the black suit Spidey one, with a big brown water ring on the back cover. I panicked and almost tossed it, but my buddy who runs a shop told me to try a dry cleaning pad on it first. Took me about 20 minutes and the stain lifted enough that it went from a 2.5 to a 4.5 when I took it in. Wound up getting $140 in store credit for it, which I flipped into some X-Men back issues I actually wanted. Anyone else had luck saving a water damaged book, or do you just eat the loss?
Noticed this same thing with old tools and furniture too. People see a scratch or a stain and their brain just flips a switch to trash mode, but half the time the damage is only on the surface and some patience fixes it. Had a buddy who almost threw out his grandpa's whole record collection because the sleeves had mold, and a little sun and wiping saved most of it. We are way too quick to call something ruined when we could just slow down and try one small thing first. Getting a 2.5 up to a 4.5 with a cleaning pad is a nice reminder that condition grades are not as set in stone as people treat them.
