Omnibus or floppies, which one really wins for the money?

I dropped $75 on a deluxe omnibus of a 90s run I loved as a kid, thinking the paper quality and binding would make the reread special. The first 50 pages were great, but then I hit the spine crease problem and panels near the center fold got swallowed. Meanwhile my buddy swears by hunting down the floppies in dollar bins, says he got the whole 24 issue run for under $30 over six months. Now I'm sitting here with a fancy brick that's awkward to hold and I keep second guessing if the extra money actually bought me anything real. Does the collected edition experience beat the hunt and the original ads for you, or am I just stuck on nostalgia? Who else has dropped big cash on a hardcover only to feel let down by the practicality of it?

Did you try reading it at a table or were you holding it like a normal book? I ask because I made the same mistake with a big hardcover last year and almost gave up on it, then someone told me to lay it flat and the reading got way better. That said, the spine crease thing is real and it bugs me too, especially when you paid good money for something that should hold up. Honestly the floppy hunt sounds fun but it takes patience and gas money, and you also get those old ads which can be a blast or super annoying depending on your mood. I still buy collected editions for the stuff I truly love because I want it all in one place on the shelf, but for anything I'm just curious about, dollar bins win every time. You're not stuck on nostalgia, you just learned what your money actually buys, and that's worth knowing.

Man, I heard a guy at my local shop say the exact same thing about laying hardcovers flat, and it actually does help a ton. The old ads are half the fun for me too, you never know what weird stuff they were pushing back then.
