Rolled my eyes at the guy in my local shop raving about cheap 90s Image comics
Picked up a beat-up copy of Savage Dragon #1 for $5 as a joke and ended up reading the whole run it led to in one weekend. Has anyone else been surprised by a back issue they grabbed just for the cover?

Nah I gotta push back on rolling your eyes at that guy. Image in the 90s had some real gems hiding behind the pouches and big guns. Savage Dragon is actually legit, Larsen kept that book going for like 200+ issues with solid storytelling. You grabbed it as a joke and ended up loving it so that kinda proves the point right? People sleep on books like Prophet or Supreme from that era too because they remember the bad covers and forget guys like Alan Moore and Keith Giffen were doing some wild experimental stuff for Image. Not saying every chromium cover foam gun variant is gold but writing off the whole line because of the cliches means missing out.

Read an interview with Erik Larsen a couple years back where he talked about how he basically funded the early Savage Dragon issues out of pocket because nobody believed in a non-superhero Image book. That stuck with me honestly. Picked up a random issue of Prophet from a dollar bin too and it turned out to be an early Brandon Graham reboot which was way weirder and more interesting than I expected. The pouches and big guns were definitely a thing but there's some genuinely good stuff hiding under all that 90s cheese.
