Talking to my cousin's kid about why he only reads manga now really got me thinking.
He said, 'Uncle Kim, the Marvel movies are cool, but the comics feel like homework to catch up on 60 years of stuff,' and that hit different because it's exactly why my friends won't try comics either.

That kid nailed it. I tried getting into X-Men comics last year and the reading lists felt like a second job. Reese_hayes71 has a point about some people loving homework, but most of us just want a good story without needing a wiki open the whole time. Manga series usually have one clear starting point and one author's vision. It's just easier to jump into. I get why the big two stick to their continuity, but it builds a wall for new readers.

The homework is the best part though.

I remember my algebra teacher in 1998 saying something similar. He had a real passion for quadratic equations that the rest of us just couldn't match. You must be one of those rare people who finds joy in solving for X on a Friday night. I always figured that kind of love for homework was a myth, like a quiet cafeteria.
