Used to buy every variant cover of a run, now I just stick to one printing

Back in 2018 I was spending about $80 a month on all the different covers for the Donny Cates Venom run. After moving to a smaller apartment in Portland last fall I realized I had three boxes full of basically the same comics. Now I just grab the main cover from my local shop and call it done. Anyone else cut way back on variant collecting?

Man, I feel this so hard. I had a whole shelf of variant covers from the Immortal Hulk run and it finally hit me that I was just buying the same story over and over for different pictures. Letting go of that completionist mindset was actually kind of freeing. Now I just pick whichever cover speaks to me that week, usually the regular one. It makes the whole hobby feel lighter, you know?

Three whole longboxes of Amazing Spider-Man variants I had before I woke up. @bennett.harper you nailed it with the "same story over and over" thing. I did the same thing with Venom during Donny Cates' run, buying every single cover variant thinking I needed the whole set. Eventually I just started grabbing the regular cover or maybe a sketch variant if I really liked the art. The completionist thing is a trap (especially when you realize you're spending like $8 on a $4 comic just for a different picture of Venom's teeth). Feels way better now not having that mental checklist hanging over me every Wednesday.
