Vent: That one guy who told me to stop collecting variant covers
I was at Midtown Comics in NYC like 6 months ago and this older collector saw me grabbing every foil variant for a new issue. He flat out told me I was wasting money and missing the actual story. At first I was annoyed but he was right, I had like 20 copies of the same book and couldn't even tell you what happened in it. Now I only buy one copy per issue and actually read them. Anyone else have a random stranger change their collecting habits?

Did you actually stick with just one copy or did you slip back after a while? I feel like changing that habit would be harder than it sounds.

Oh man, I had to do the same thing with my cookbook collection - I stopped myself every time I reached for a new one and made myself make three recipes from what I already owned first, and it totally rewired my brain after a couple months.

You said "changing that habit would be harder than it sounds" and honestly it was rough for the first few weeks. My hands would just grab variants out of muscle memory and I'd have to put them back on the shelf like a weirdo. But after I forced myself to read every book I bought, it clicked that I was spending more time hunting than enjoying the stories.
